What Is a Panoramic Film?
A panoramic dental radiograph (OPG) is a two-dimensional imaging method that shows the upper and lower jawbones, the dental arch, the jaw-joint region and surrounding structures in a single frame. During examination it provides quick information about a wide field; however, it may not always show micro-detail of a single tooth.
During the exposure the device moves slowly around your head. Metal jewellery, piercings or neck accessories may impair image quality and may be asked to be removed. Remaining still for a short time is enough; the exposure is generally contact-free and brief. With digital panoramic systems the dose is usually lower than with older film-based methods; even so, a clinical rationale is sought for every exposure.
Which Clinical Questions Does It Help With?
A panoramic film may be used for general assessment of impacted-tooth position, bone-level follow-up, suspicion of cyst or lesion, and preliminary implant planning. Whether wisdom teeth (20) have erupted or remain impacted, and their relation to the mandibular canal and sinus floor, can be reviewed in two dimensions.
In children, development of erupting teeth can be monitored. It is preferred to build an overall picture before orthodontic or surgical planning. The film alone does not establish a diagnosis; the clinician combines findings with examination. Compared with a periapical film, a panoramic image covers a wider field; additional exposure may be needed for fine detail at a single root apex.
Limits and Additional Imaging
A panoramic image may not always detect small interdental caries or fine bone detail. Metal prostheses and fillings may create artefacts that make interpretation harder. Measurement precision is not as high as with CBCT; additional tomography may be required for implant or complex surgical plans.
Radiation dose varies by device and protocol. In pregnancy needed imaging is not automatically deferred; the decision follows clinical necessity and benefit–risk assessment. Use of a lead apron or thyroid shield is assessed according to current guidance and local protocol. Distance to the mandibular canal and sinus floor appears as an estimate on a panoramic film; when millimetre-level measurement is needed, CBCT may be considered.
Result and Follow-up
After the exposure the image is saved to the digital archive; comparison can be made at later reviews. How often it is repeated is not set by a fixed calendar but by clinical need. Films brought from previous centres may reduce repeat exposure.
During reporting, findings are explained to you in clear language; if a suspicious lesion or asymmetry is detected, further assessment is planned; sampling is discussed separately if considered necessary. A panoramic film may serve as a routine review tool; however, it may not be sufficient for every dental problem.
