Dental Cleaning for Children

Age-appropriate professional cleaning and oral-hygiene education; it does not replace home care and differs from adult deep periodontal cleaning.

Dental Cleaning for Children

Professional Cleaning for Children

Dental cleaning for children, or prophylaxis, removes plaque and surface deposits with age-appropriate methods and teaches oral hygiene.

It is not the same as adult deep gum cleaning; periodontal pocket depth and tissue response are assessed differently in children.

Difference from Adult Cleaning

The gums may be more sensitive, so ultrasonic instruments are used carefully and gently. Deep periodontal treatment is rarely applied with adult protocols in children.

Session length may be shortened or divided according to attention span and cooperation.

Procedure

Plaque and staining are removed with a soft brush or polishing cup. Disclosing agents may be used to show brushing gaps.

Fluoride varnish or gel may be applied in suitable cases, with dose adjusted for age.

Preventive Support

Children with high caries risk may need shorter recall intervals. Dietary advice and limitation of sugary snacks can be discussed.

Fluoride may help reduce caries risk, but it is not sufficient protection on its own.

Home-care Education

An age-appropriate toothbrush and pea-sized fluoride toothpaste are advised. Young children should brush under parental supervision.

Dental floss can be taught when teeth come into contact. Regular checks are usually six-monthly but depend on risk.

During the cleaning visit, the gum barrier and brushing technique can be shown to the parent. If an orthodontic appliance is present, interdental-brush use is explained.

In children with a high caries-risk score, the recall interval may be shortened; this is an individual decision.

After professional cleaning, the gums may show mild sensitivity; this usually resolves quickly.

The dentist can demonstrate brushing technique to the child; positive reinforcement may be used.

After fluoride varnish application, avoiding food and drink for a period may be advised.

The cleaning visit can also help the child build a positive relationship with the dentist.
